“Thanks for coming with me, Charlotte. Steel had hoped he would be back by now,” I said as we entered the clinic Stella had recommended. Both she and Charlotte came here to confirm their pregnancies.
“No problem. Shiloh is with her grandparents for two days, and I am at a loss without her and her father. I miss Deck like a fat kid on a diet misses cake.” She laughed as we signed in at the front desk. Then we got the paperwork out of the way before taking a seat in the crowded waiting room.
“I thought they would have been back by now. Steel said originally that he was going to be gone for just five days. But last night, when he called, he said it was going to be another five days at least,” I whined as I picked up a magazine and absently flicked through it, trying not to see the photos of birthing scenes. Oh, God, was that going to happen to my vagina?
“I know. Deck is more over-protective hundreds of kilometres away than he is when he is here, and that is a lot.” Charlotte giggled, then reached over and took the magazine from my hands, throwing it on the empty seat beside her.
I raised my eyebrows at her because I was reading that. Sort of.
“Sorry, sweetie, but I don’t need a visual of what is going to happen to me when I give birth to this brute of a son Deck is convinced we are having,” she explained with a shrug of her slim shoulders. She had a point. Charlotte was so tiny, and Deck was not. The chances the baby was going to be a little five pounder was highly unlikely. Poor woman. I was deliberately not thinking about how big Steel was. So not going there.
“So does he know you took off with me today?”
“Nope. Does Steel know you took off without a detail?”
“Nope. None of the prospects was available, and Booth and Stella are shopping for baby furniture. This is a medical clinic, for heaven’s sake. Surely, we are safe here,” I said pragmatically, but a glare from Charlotte sparked my brain, reminding me of the incident a few months back when Charlotte’s car and Deck’s motorcycle were blown up at this very clinic’s car park.
“Ah, yes, we may be in some trouble,” I conceded with a sly grin. It wasn’t that I didn’t take the threat from Rogue seriously, because I did. The night Stella was kidnapped was the scariest time of my life. A horrible experience I did not want to have again anytime soon.
“Mia Stone,” a voice called out, stopping any more thoughts of the trouble Charlotte and I may be in with Deck and Steel but conjuring a plethora of other thoughts of the trouble I may be in.
“Okay, sweetie, it’s time to give over some blood,” Charlotte said in a singsong voice as she got gracefully to her feet. I hoped I took as good as she does during pregnancy.
